Driving Around Cairns
For your safety, all drivers should familiarise themselves with the Australian road rules. Cairns also has a few unique driving conditions:
Single-Lane Bridges: Some scenic routes north of Cairns, particularly towards the Daintree, have single-lane bridges. Slow down, give way to oncoming traffic where required, and follow the signage.
Wet Season: Between November and April, heavy rainfall can lead to flash flooding and temporary road closures. Always check road conditions before setting off.
Road Trains: On highways outside the city, you may encounter long road trains. Only overtake when it is safe, legal, and you have a clear view ahead.
Tourist Traffic: Popular routes to Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge, and the Atherton Tablelands can become busy during holiday periods. Allow extra time and be patient with slower-moving traffic.
Cruisin’ Motorhomes strongly recommend that you DO NOT drive at night. It’s just not worth it, here’s why. Also, please read the Dos & Don’ts while travelling in a motorhome and learn the difference between Sealed and Unsealed roads.
